USB Dash Cam for Android Head Units: A Guide for Installers and Distributors

How USB dash cams for Android head units work, 720P vs 1080P, single vs dual camera, lens angle and TF card, plus what distributors should stock.

· ShinVea

Short answer: a USB dash cam for Android head units is a small camera with no screen of its own. It plugs into the USB port of an Android car screen (large-screen or DVD navigation unit) and records through the app on the head unit. For installers it is the quickest dash cam to fit in a car that already has an Android screen; for distributors it is a strong add-on to every head unit sale. ShinVea offers 23 USB models: 720P and 1080P single cameras, and 1080P dual cameras with reverse camera view.

Why USB dash cams sell well with Android head units

Android head units are now a standard upgrade in many markets. Once a customer has one, a USB dash cam is a natural second sale:

  • No extra screen. Live view, playback and settings run on the head unit display the customer already uses.
  • Clean install. One USB cable from the camera behind the mirror to the head unit. Several models have a hidden, OEM-style design.
  • Easy upsell at the fitting bay. The installer is already behind the dashboard when fitting the screen.
  • Low return risk. Specifications are simple: resolution, lens angle, single or dual camera.

How a USB dash cam works

The camera records video in MP4 (MJPEG) format onto a TF (microSD) card, using the card slot on the camera. ShinVea's USB models support TF cards up to 32GB and use loop recording, so the oldest files are overwritten when the card is full. Every model has a built-in microphone. The head unit's app shows the live picture and lets the driver play back or manage recordings.

Before you sell, check that the customer's head unit is an Android unit with a free USB port and that its app supports a USB camera. Confirm this with the head unit supplier if you are unsure.

Dual models record 1080P front and rear and add a reverse camera view.

Many distributors stock one or two 720P models for entry bundles and several 1080P models as the main range. The SV-A10, for example, is a 1080P plug-and-play model with a large glass lens and a 170° wide angle.

Single vs dual camera

ShinVea's USB range includes six dual-camera models: SV-A60, SV-A16, SV-A28, SV-A15, SV-A40S and SV-A20 Dual Cam. All record at 1920×1080, 30fps with a 170° wide angle, offer equal clarity front and rear, and add a reverse camera view, so one product replaces a separate reversing camera in many installs.

Choose a single camera when Choose a dual camera when
The customer only needs front recording The customer wants front and rear evidence
The car already has a reversing camera The car has no reversing camera yet
The bundle is entry-level Taxi, ride-hailing or family cars that need rear coverage

Lens angle, glass lens and housing

  • Lens angle: 140° on several entry 720P models, 150° on models such as the SV-A09, SV-A5, SV-A5 H65 and SV-A15 Starlight, and 170° on the SV-A2, SV-A300 and most 1080P and dual models. A wider angle covers more lanes; a narrower angle shows more detail straight ahead.
  • Glass lens: many 1080P models use a 4-glass all-glass lens, and several list a large glass lens.
  • Housing: zinc alloy housings on models such as the SV-A09, SV-A5, SV-A23, SV-A3, SV-A15 PRO and SV-A16 PRO.
  • Night recording: the SV-A15 Starlight lists zero-light night vision; the SV-A5 H65, SV-A15 PRO, SV-A16 PRO and SV-A40 PRO list low-light night vision and speed display.

Driver-assist features

Most ShinVea USB dash cams list ADAS and a fixed speed camera alert. These are useful selling points for head unit bundles, but tell customers that alerts depend on the head unit app and local data. Do not promise features that you have not tested on the customer's head unit.

Installation tips for workshops

  1. Mount behind the rear-view mirror so the camera does not block the driver's view.
  2. Route the USB cable along the headliner and A-pillar, away from airbags.
  3. Format the TF card in the head unit app before handing the car back.
  4. For dual models, route the rear camera cable to the rear window or number plate area, and test the reverse view.
  5. Check local rules for audio recording and windscreen mounting.

What to stock as a distributor

A practical starter range has two 720P single models, three or four 1080P single models with different angles and housings, and two dual models. Add your own logo and packaging when volumes grow: ShinVea's OEM / ODM service covers logo, packaging, manual language and model versions, confirmed per model. See OEM / ODM for the process.
